SENIOR SOCIAL ISSUES ADVISER
 

ECGD have an exciting opportunity to join their Environmental Advisory Unit as a Senior Social Issues Adviser.

The main responsibilities of this role are:

  • Providing specialist advice on the social aspects of case impact assessments which includes gathering, assessing and benchmarking environmental information on projects; liaising with key stakeholders, both internally and externally; and producing and presenting your findings and recommendations;
  • Developing policy and procedures; and
  • Producing management information for presentation at internal committee meetings
  • Coaching and training other team members on social issues
  • Overseas travel will be a requirement of this role, including visits to the site of proposed projects.

The successful candidate will need to have the following knowledge and skills:

Essential
  • Knowledge of ECGD’s role and purpose.
  • Knowledge of UK Government policies on the environment, Human Rights and International Development.
  • Specific / technical knowledge of social and human rights aspects of international standards and practice.
  • Knowledge of the technical aspects of ECGD supported projects and the ability to understand and assess such complex technical information.
  • The ability to quickly get up to speed on projects in unfamiliar sectors.
  • The confidence to discuss technical aspects of projects with customers and convey the implications of technical information to non-specialists, Business Managers and Senior Management.
  • The ability to produce clear written assessments of cases.
  • The self-confidence to explain and defend assessments, sometimes against opposing views.
  • Self motivation and ability to work without supervision.
Desirable
  • Experience with environmental due diligence in addition to social expertise.
  • Secondary language capabilities – ideally Arabic, Russian or Portuguese.
  • Direct experience with assessment of projects against international standards.
  • An understanding of technical/engineering concepts and terminology
